Goa is famous for its beaches, nightlife, and seafood
,but did you know it also has a treasure trove of fascinating legends? One such legends is that of Rakhandar(village protector)-the mysterious guardian spirit who protect villages from Harm.

But who is Rakhondar? And why do the villagers still believe in him today? Let’s dive into this intriguing tale!

Have You Ever Heard of Rakhondar?

If you ever find yourself walking alone at night in the villages of Navelim or Amona, don’t be surprised if you feel an unseen presence watching over you. No, it’s not just your imagination—it might be Rakhondar, the village protector.

Every boundary (Sima) of Navelim village there is a protector or( Rakno). He is the form of divine betal in the north side of Navelim village there is a Rakno 'Pauleshwar'.

The people here believe that he ensures their safety, appearing in times of need to guide lost travelers home. But there’s one important rule—never turn back and look at him while he’s helping you!

What do you think? Would you follow this rule, or would curiosity get the best of you?

Why Do Villagers Worship Rakhondar?

Let's get to know more about Rakhondar "Pauleshwar" from Mr. Nilkhant Gauns

"You all must be wondering why his name was Pauleshwar?

It is because in earlier time there used to be a lot of farming in this village or the neighbouring villages The neighbouring villages called Kudnya there was shortage of water for farming so he gave them a Paul of water to them But even now there is a road (path) called ' PAUL' from there water goes to Kudnya village.

Long ago, these villages faced many hardships. Water scarcity was a major issue  , and pregnant women often lost their lives during childbirth, causing fear and distress among the villagers. They believed that evil spirits were responsible for their misfortunes—until Rakhondar appeared as their protector.

Even today, many villagers offer chicken or blood to Rakhondar as a sign of gratitude. Some might find this ritual unusual, but for the locals, it is a way of maintaining their connection with their guardian."

What do you think about such traditions? Do you believe in guardian spirits?

What Does Rakhondar Look Like?

There are different descriptions of Rakhondar. Some say he appears as a tall man dressed like a shepherd, with a wooden shawl draped over his shoulders and a staff in hand. Others claim he takes the form of a horse, which is why villagers hold great respect for horses.

If you had to imagine Rakhondar, what would he look like in your mind? A warrior? A shadowy figure? A guiding light in the darkness?

A Living Legend

The belief in Rakhondar is not just an old myth—it’s a part of daily life in these villages. The Pauleshwar Temple, dedicated to him, stands as a symbol of faith and protection. Even today, people pray to Rakhondar before making important decisions or traveling long distances.
